Trent Reedy’s standalone novels cover a wide range of subjects, united by his interest in young people facing difficult choices. His debut Words in the Dust (2011) draws directly on his time in Afghanistan to tell the story of Zulaikha, a girl with a cleft lip who dreams of an education in a country torn by war.
Stealing Air (2012) is a lighter adventure about three boys who secretly build and fly an airplane. If You’re Reading This (2014) follows a boy who receives letters from his father, a soldier killed in Afghanistan, on his sixteenth birthday. Gamer Army (2018) moves into science fiction territory, imagining a future where video game skills have military applications. Enduring Freedom (2021) returns to Afghanistan with another story shaped by Reedy’s service. Across all these books, Reedy writes with a directness and moral seriousness that respects his young audience.
