Patti Callahan Henry’s eighteen standalone novels trace an arc from contemporary Southern fiction to historical novels with wide critical and commercial appeal. Her early books — Losing the Moon (2004), Where the River Runs (2005), When Light Breaks (2006) — are set in the present-day South and explore relationships, family secrets, and the pull of home.
The shift began around 2017 with The Bookshop at Water’s End, and Becoming Mrs. Lewis (2018) marked her arrival as a historical novelist. Since then, Henry has published a series of historically grounded novels, each centered on a real event or figure: the shipwreck of the SS Pulaski in Surviving Savannah, C.S. Lewis’s early life in Once Upon a Wardrobe, and a wartime mystery in The Secret Book of Flora Lea. Her most recent, The Story She Left Behind (2025), continues in this vein.
