| I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer | 2018 | Buy |
Michelle McNamara was a true crime writer who founded the website TrueCrimeDiary.com and spent years investigating the case of the Golden State Killer, a serial rapist and murderer who terrorized California in the 1970s and 1980s. Her obsessive research into the case produced detailed work that went far beyond what most journalists attempted.
McNamara died in 2016 before completing her book. Her husband Patton Oswalt, along with researchers Paul Haynes and Billy Jensen, assembled her notes, drafts, and research into the finished manuscript. The result, published in 2018, became a bestseller and brought massive public attention to the case. Joseph DeAngelo was arrested as the Golden State Killer in April 2018, two months after the book’s release.
