The Zer0es series by Chuck Wendig is a pair of techno-thrillers published by Harper Voyager. Zeroes (2015) brings together five hackers who are arrested for various cybercrimes and given a choice: go to prison or work for the government at a remote facility called the Lodge. What starts as a straightforward covert operation goes sideways when the hackers discover that the program they are part of is connected to an artificial intelligence with its own agenda.
Invasive (2016) shifts focus to Hannah Stander, an FBI consultant and futurist who investigates a body found covered in genetically modified ants. The trail leads to a remote island laboratory and a bio-engineering project with terrifying implications. While the book has a different protagonist and premise, it takes place in the same world as Zeroes and shares its anxieties about technology being weaponized.
Both books are fast reads with short chapters and a thriller pace. Wendig brings the same energy he puts into his horror and fantasy work, just aimed at near-future technology instead of the supernatural. The series reflects real concerns about surveillance, AI development, and the potential misuse of genetic engineering.
