Yuri Herrera’s three novellas are often discussed together as a thematic trilogy, though each has its own characters and setting. Kingdom Cons (2004) is about a singer who becomes a narco-ballad composer for a drug lord. Signs Preceding the End of the World (2009) follows Makina as she crosses the border to find her brother. The Transmigration of Bodies (2016) reimagines Romeo and Juliet amid a plague in a Mexican city.
All three were originally published in Spanish and later translated into English by Lisa Dillman. They are short, dense books that reward careful reading.
