You Had Me At Hello was Mhairi McFarlane’s debut novel, published in 2012. Set in Manchester, it follows Rachel, who runs into her old university friend Ben at a time when both of their lives are falling apart. The novel became a bestseller and established McFarlane as a fresh voice in British romantic comedy.
The series includes Sinuun mina jain, the Finnish-language edition of the original novel, as well as After Hello (2017), a follow-up novella that returns to Rachel and Ben’s story. Readers who enjoyed the original will find After Hello a satisfying check-in with the characters rather than a full-length continuation.
McFarlane has said that Manchester is almost a character in the book, and she drew heavily on her own years living in the city. The result is a romance that feels grounded in real places and real friendships, with the kind of sharp observational humor that would become her signature across later novels.
