Yangsze Choo’s standalone novels are historical fiction stories that incorporate supernatural elements from Chinese and Malay folklore. The Ghost Bride (2013), set in colonial Malaya, follows a woman offered in marriage to a dead man and was adapted into a Netflix series. The Night Tiger (2019) is set in 1930s British Malaya and involves a missing finger, a were-tiger legend, and two characters whose lives become intertwined.
The Fox Wife (2024), her most recent novel, takes place in 1908 Manchuria and draws on Chinese fox spirit mythology. While the three books are unrelated by plot, they all combine historical settings in East and Southeast Asia with local ghost stories and folklore traditions.
