Samuel Marquis’s World War II series spans the major theaters of the conflict through five standalone novels, each told from the perspectives of real historical figures. The books draw heavily on declassified intelligence documents and recent historical research to bring lesser-known stories to the foreground.
Bodyguard of Deception (2016) follows two German brothers, one a double agent and the other a U-boat captain, as the Allies race to protect the secret of the D-Day invasion site. Altar of Resistance (2017) covers the Nazi occupation of Rome from 1943 to 1944, with Pope Pius XII, an American operative, and an Italian resistance fighter working to liberate the city. Spies of the Midnight Sun (2018) tells the true story of British safecracker and double agent Eddie Chapman and Norwegian resistance operatives Dagmar Lahlum and Annemarie Breien in Occupied Norway. Lions of the Desert (2019) focuses on the 1941-1942 desert war in North Africa, including Rommel’s Africa Corps, the founding of the SAS, and the real Operation Condor spy mission in Cairo. Soldiers of Freedom (2020) follows an African-American tank gunner in Patton’s 761st Tank Battalion and a teenage German resistance fighter with the Edelweiss Pirates during the final Allied drive into Germany.
