The World of Hetar by Bertrice Small is her most ambitious fantasy series, following the half-faerie heroine Lara across six novels set in the magical world of Hetar. Beginning with Lara (2005), the series traces her journey from an impoverished girl sold at auction to a powerful figure who shapes the fate of entire nations. The world-building includes multiple kingdoms, faerie courts, and an overarching conflict between light and darkness that plays out across the full run of books.
This extended reading order also includes the six Border Chronicles novels (A Dangerous Love through Bond of Passion), which were published alongside the Hetar books. The Border Chronicles are set on the Scottish-English border during the Tudor period and are historical romances rather than fantasy, but the database groups them here because Small was writing both series simultaneously and they share the same publication window.
Readers interested only in the fantasy storyline can focus on the first six books (Lara through Crown of Destiny) for the complete Hetar saga. Those who want the Border Chronicles should also check The Border Chronicles page, which includes the later Silk Merchant’s Daughters novels as well.
