The Wolves of Odin series is Turney’s entry into Viking historical fiction, set around AD 1040 as Christianity has swept across Scandinavia and the old Norse ways are dying out. Jarl Halfdan Loki-Born leads a renowned warband called the Wolves of Odin, returning home after years of voyaging around the known world.
The series takes Halfdan and his warriors through blood feuds in Scandinavia, service in the Byzantine emperor’s Varangian Guard in Constantinople, and conflicts that stretch from the frozen north to the Mediterranean. Turney applies his usual approach – detailed military action grounded in historical research – to the Viking world, exploring what it meant to hold onto the old gods in an age that was leaving them behind.
The series has been well received, with reader ratings climbing through each installment, and represents Turney’s most successful work outside his Roman fiction.
