Sarah Prineas’s Winterling series takes place in a world where the human realm and fairy lands are connected by magical passages called Ways. Fer (short for Jennifer) is a girl raised by her grandmother who has a gift for healing herbs. When she stumbles through a Way, she finds a frozen land ruled by the Mor, a ruthless huntress who keeps the realm locked in winter.
Thrice Sworn is a short digital-only prequel focusing on Rook, a shape-shifting puck bound to the Mor’s service. The main trilogy begins with Winterling (2012), where Fer confronts the Mor and begins to understand her connection to the land. In Summerkin, Fer has become Lady of the Summerlands and must prove herself through a dangerous contest. Moonkind brings the story to a close as Fer faces the Forsworn, beings who threaten to destroy the realm with broken oaths.
The series was a Winter 2012 Indie Next pick. Like Prineas’s other work, it blends accessible middle grade storytelling with a detailed fantasy world built on fairy lore and seasonal magic.
