The Winterkill trilogy begins in an isolated prairie settlement where the community has survived for generations by following strict rules. Emmeline, the protagonist, bears the stain of her grandmother’s supposed crime and is treated as an outsider. When she begins to question the settlement’s laws and legends, she discovers that much of what she has been told is a lie.
The series continues with Darkthaw and Heartfire, expanding the world beyond the settlement and raising the stakes as Emmeline confronts the forces that keep her community in the dark. Kate A. Boorman builds a dystopia grounded in specific geography — the Canadian prairies in deep winter — giving the series a physical atmosphere that sets it apart from more urban-focused dystopian fiction.
