Wings in the Night is Maggie Shayne’s signature series and the work that established her reputation in paranormal romance. Beginning with Twilight Phantasies in 1993, the books are set in a world where vampires are created from humans who carry a rare genetic marker called the Belladonna Antigen. Each novel follows a different couple, usually pairing a vampire with a human or another supernatural being, while building on a shared mythology that deepens with every entry.
The series introduced some of Shayne’s most beloved characters, particularly the ancient vampire Rhiannon, who has appeared across multiple books and eventually received her own origin story in 2023’s Young Rhiannon in the Temple of Isis. Over its three-decade run, the series has covered vampire hunters, rogue vampires, ancient prophecies, and the ongoing struggle between those who protect humans with the Belladonna Antigen and those who would exploit them.
With 24 books and several international editions, Wings in the Night remains one of the longest-running vampire romance series in the genre. It also spawned a continuation series, Wings in the Night: Reborn, which picks up the story with new characters in the same world.
