Darkness Visible (1990) is William Styron’s most widely read non-fiction work and one of the most important books about depression ever published. In 84 pages, Styron describes his descent into severe clinical depression with the same literary precision he brought to his novels. The book was credited with helping to open public conversation about mental illness at a time when depression carried heavy stigma.
His other non-fiction includes letters and essay collections published during his life and after his death in 2006. Selected Letters of William Styron (2012) covers his correspondence with other writers and public figures. Havanas in Camelot (2008) and My Generation (2015) collect essays and occasional pieces that show Styron’s engagement with politics, culture, and the writer’s life.
