William Golding’s nine standalone novels form one of the most distinguished catalogs in twentieth-century English literature. Lord of the Flies (1954) made him famous, and The Inheritors (1955), told from the perspective of Neanderthals encountering Homo sapiens, showed his ambition. The Spire (1964) follows a medieval dean obsessed with building an impossible cathedral spire.
Later novels like Darkness Visible (1979) and The Paper Men (1984) continued to explore moral and philosophical questions. The Double Tongue (1995) was published posthumously.
