Wild’s End is a creator-owned comics series by Dan Abnett and artist I.N.J. Culbard, published by Boom! Studios beginning in 2014. The series is set in the fictional English village of Lower Crowchurch in the 1930s, populated entirely by anthropomorphic animals who live in the manner of the rural English middle and working classes of the era. The story begins when a UFO crashes in the nearby countryside and its mechanical alien occupants start attacking the villagers, triggering a survival crisis.
Abnett and Culbard use the alien invasion framework to explore character dynamics within the village, focusing on a small group of survivors that includes a retired military man, a reclusive writer, and various neighbours who must work together despite their differences. The series draws explicit comparison to H.G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds in setting and tone, transposing the Edwardian invasion narrative into a 1930s context with the added anthropomorphic aesthetic. Culbard’s art uses a clean, slightly retro style that suits the period setting.
The series spans three arcs: the original six-issue run collected in volume one, the Enemy Within arc in volume two, and Journey’s End in volume three. Reading in order is recommended, as the three arcs form a continuous narrative following the same characters from the initial invasion through its resolution.
