Wild Boy (2013) introduces a boy who has grown up as a freak show attraction in Victorian England, exhibited for the hair that covers his body. When a murder takes place at his circus, he uses his sharp eyes and mind to investigate, starting a short-lived but memorable detective career. Rob Lloyd Jones drew on the real history of Victorian freak shows to build an atmospheric backdrop.
The follow-up, Wild Boy and the Black Terror (2014), expanded the world and raised the stakes. The two books together form a complete story, with the second book resolving threads set up in the first. Both were well received for their historical setting and their willingness to put a genuinely unusual protagonist at the center of the story.
The series ran to two books before concluding. Readers who enjoy gothic historical fiction for young people, or who liked the atmosphere of stories set in the dark corners of Victorian Britain, will find Wild Boy a good fit.
