The Whiteout graphic novels are set in Antarctica, where U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko investigates crimes in one of the most isolated environments on Earth. The original Whiteout was published in 1998, with the sequel Melt following in 2000. The series also includes related Dragon Age graphic novel entries in the collected editions.
Rucka and artist Steve Lieber used the Antarctic setting to create a crime story unlike anything else in comics. The isolation, the cold, and the limited cast of suspects give these graphic novels a claustrophobic intensity that sets them apart from typical crime fiction.
