The White House Gardener Mystery series puts a murder mystery where you’d least expect it: among the rose bushes and vegetable gardens of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Dorothy St. James’s protagonist, Casey Calhoun, is an assistant groundskeeper whose job gives her proximity to the powerful and the dangerous.
Flowerbed of State (2011), The Scarlet Pepper (2012), and Oak and Dagger (2013) each use the White House setting to full effect. The combination of political backdrop and cozy mystery convention is unusual, and St. James gets good mileage out of the contrast between the high-stakes world of Washington and the quiet rhythms of tending a garden.
