The Bequin series is a spin-off from Dan Abnett’s Eisenhorn trilogy, focusing on Alizebeth Bequin, a recurring character from that sequence who is also a “null” or “blank” — a human whose absence of psychic resonance makes her valuable to Inquisitors but threatening to those who rely on the warp. The first volume, Titan, was published in 2002 as a short companion piece. Pariah, published in 2012, began the main Bequin sequence in earnest, following a young woman called Alizebeth Bequin (not the same individual as the original) who investigates a conspiracy within the Inquisition on the hive world Sancour.
The ten-year gap between Titan and Pariah reflects the slow pace at which Abnett has developed this corner of the Inquisitor’s world. Penitent, the third volume, arrived in 2021, continuing the story of the younger Bequin’s investigation and her growing connection to the wider Eisenhorn mythology. The series is closely connected to Abnett’s Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies, and readers will get more from it with knowledge of those prior series.
The Bequin books are among the slower-paced, more atmospheric entries in the Black Library catalogue, prioritising character and setting over action. Readers who enjoyed the Eisenhorn trilogy’s blend of detective fiction and Warhammer 40,000 horror will find similar pleasures here. Start with Pariah for the main narrative; Titan is a short atmospheric piece best read first for context.
