Wandering Monsters flips the typical fantasy adventure on its head. Instead of following a band of heroes raiding a dungeon, the story is told from the monsters’ side. When adventurers storm the lair of an evil wizard, a small group of his servants survives: Scars, a half-orc warrior with no clan loyalty; a goblin scout; a heretical gnoll; the wizard’s human apprentice; a bandit; and a lady bugbear. Together they flee through the darkest tunnels of the dungeon, trying to escape before the heroes find them.
The second book, Nowhere to Run, picks up with the group trying to earn a living by helping a small village, only to be thrown out once the danger passes. They end up at a refugee camp of outcast orcs and goblin folk, but the situation grows worse when supposed bandits turn out to be scouts for the king’s army, and real reinforcements are on their way to wipe out the refugees. The books touch on themes of belonging and prejudice while keeping the tone light and action-driven, with distinct personalities for each member of the monster crew.
