These three collections span twenty years of Walter Jon Williams’s short fiction career. Facets (1990) gathers his earliest stories, written during the period when he was establishing himself as a cyberpunk and hard SF writer. Frankensteins and Foreign Devils (1998) covers his work from the late 1980s through the 1990s, a period when he was branching out into comedy and alternate history alongside other subgenres.
The Green Leopard Plague and Other Stories (2010) is the most recent and probably the strongest of the three. It includes the Nebula-winning title story along with other major works from the 2000s. For readers who want to sample Williams’s writing before committing to one of his novel series, these collections are a good way in.
