Vladimir Sorokin’s short fiction has been appearing in English translation through New York Review Books, with Red Pyramid published in 2024 and Dispatches from the District Committee following in 2025. Both collections were translated by Max Lawton, who has become the primary English-language translator for Sorokin’s recent work.
Red Pyramid includes stories spanning much of Sorokin’s career, among them Horse Soup, which won an O. Henry Award. The stories range from realistic to grotesque, often starting in familiar domestic settings before veering into surreal or violent territory. Dispatches from the District Committee draws on Sorokin’s earlier satirical writing about Soviet officialdom. Together these collections give English-language readers access to Sorokin’s shorter work, which has long been overshadowed by his novels but shows the same dark wit and willingness to push past comfortable boundaries.
