The Vlad Taltos series is one of the most unique in fantasy literature. Vlad is an Easterner (human) living in a world of Dragaerans (elves, essentially, but they hate being called that) who live for thousands of years. Vlad makes his living as an assassin and a low-level boss in the Jhereg, the criminal house of the Dragaeran Empire.
The series is famous for its non-linear timeline. Each book is named after one of the Great Houses, and they jump around in Vlad’s life, showing his rise, his marriage, his exile, and his various brushes with gods and destiny.
