The Vineart War is a fantasy series built around one of the more original magic systems in the genre: all magic comes from wine. Vinearts grow enchanted grapes and craft spell-wines that can heal wounds, control weather, or shatter stone. The series follows Jerzy, a young slave chosen to become a Vineart, as he uncovers a conspiracy.
Published between 2009 and 2013, the five books blend epic fantasy with careful worldbuilding. Gilman clearly did her homework on viticulture, and the result is a series that feels grounded even at its most fantastical.
