The Vindolanda trilogy is set on the northern frontier of Roman Britain, in the area that would become Hadrian’s Wall. Vindolanda (2017) opens the series with Roman soldiers stationed at the edge of empire, facing threats from the tribes beyond the frontier. The Encircling Sea (2018) and Brigantia (2020) continue the story.
Goldsworthy draws directly on his expertise as a Roman historian, and the real archaeological site of Vindolanda gives the series a concrete setting rooted in actual history.
