The Videssos Cycle is the series where Harry Turtledove’s love of Byzantine history really shines. The premise is simple but effective: a Roman legion gets magically transported to Videssos, a world that mirrors the Byzantine Empire. The legionaries have to navigate unfamiliar politics, religion, and warfare while trying to find a way home.
The series began in 1987 with four novels published in quick succession. The Videssos world proved popular enough that Turtledove returned to it for the Tale of Krispos and Time of Troubles sub-series. Together, these books form one of the most detailed fantasy settings in the genre, all grounded in real historical parallels.
