The Victor Carl series follows a down-on-his-luck Philadelphia lawyer who keeps getting tangled in dangerous cases. Hostile Witness (1995) introduces Victor as a young attorney willing to cut corners, and subsequent books like Bitter Truth, Fatal Flaw, and Past Due expand his world of shady clients and reluctant heroics. The series ran for 10 books through Bagmen (2014).
Victor Carl is not your typical legal thriller protagonist. He is broke, morally compromised, and often in over his head. Lashner plays this for dark humor as much as suspense, and the Philadelphia setting gives the series a gritty, blue-collar atmosphere that sets it apart from more polished legal fiction.
