The Vet Volunteers series follows a group of kids who volunteer at Dr. Mac’s Place, a veterinary clinic run by Dr. J.J. MacKenzie. Each book is narrated by a different character and focuses on a different animal situation, from rescuing stranded manatees to helping stray dogs. The series was originally published as Wild at Heart through American Girl, then republished by Puffin Books with new covers under the Vet Volunteers name.
The first twelve books came out between 2000 and 2002, and Anderson returned to the series a decade later with five more installments between 2012 and 2016. The books are aimed at middle-grade readers and mix animal stories with the everyday problems of growing up.
