Better Off Red (2011) launched Rebekah Weatherspoon’s career and established the world of the Vampire Sorority Sisters: a historically Black sorority at a fictional university, secretly managed by vampires who offer protection and blood bonds to their human pledges in exchange for, well, blood. The premise sounds alarming but Weatherspoon plays it as romance — the bonds are consensual, and the series is fundamentally about women finding belonging, desire, and chosen family.
Blacker Than Blue (2013) and Soul to Keep (2016) continue the series with different protagonists. Soul to Keep won the 2017 Lambda Literary Award. All three books are published by Bold Strokes Books and can be read independently, though the shared world rewards following the series in order.
