Valerie Bowen’s standalone novels show the range of her writing across thriller, drama, and fantasy. Published between 2012 and 2015, these four books each take a different approach while sharing Bowen’s interest in characters under emotional pressure.
Shattered (2012) is the most notable of the group, based on a true story of a woman enduring seventeen years of psychological abuse. The Drifter (2012) takes a different direction, as does The Enchanted Oasis (2013), which moves into fantasy territory. Deceitful Hearts (2015) rounds out the collection with a story about betrayal and its consequences.
These standalones complement Bowen’s series work (Mind of a Madman, For the Sake of Amelia) and show her ability to write across genres. Shattered in particular stands out for its unflinching subject matter and the personal commitment behind it, as Bowen donates portions of her royalties to organizations that support domestic abuse survivors.
