Vainqueur the Dragon is the series that put Maxime J. Durand on the map. Originally published as a web serial, the story follows Vainqueur, a greedy and self-important dragon who decides to become an adventurer in a world governed by LitRPG mechanics. The comedy comes from Vainqueur’s complete inability to take anything seriously except his own magnificence and his ever-growing hoard.
The series ran for four books from 2019 to 2022, starting with the self-titled Vainqueur the Dragon and concluding with The Last Adventure. Along the way, readers meet Vainqueur’s long-suffering human minion and a cast of characters who have to deal with a dragon who thinks the entire world revolves around him. It is one of the best-known comedy LitRPG series and a strong starting point for anyone new to Durand’s work.
