Uzumaki is widely considered Junji Ito’s masterpiece. Set in the fictional town of Kurozu-cho, the manga follows a slow-building curse centered on the spiral shape. Residents become fixated on spirals in increasingly extreme ways: a man dies trying to contort his body into a spiral, snails begin appearing on people’s backs, and the town itself starts to warp. The protagonist, Kirie Goshima, watches helplessly as the curse consumes everyone around her.
Serialized from 1998 to 1999 and collected in three volumes, Uzumaki has been translated into numerous languages and adapted into a live-action Japanese film (2000) and an Adult Swim anime series (2024). The manga’s slow escalation from strange to horrifying to apocalyptic is often cited as the finest example of cosmic horror in comics.
