The Unwind Dystology is set in a future America where a second civil war between pro-life and pro-choice factions ended with a compromise: abortion is banned, but parents can choose to have their teenagers “unwound” — a process that harvests every organ and body part for transplant, with the legal fiction that the person lives on in a “divided state.”
The series begins with Unwind (2007), following three teenagers on the run from their unwinding orders. The subsequent novels — UnWholly, UnSouled, and UnDivided — expand the world and the resistance against the practice. Companion stories and the collection UnBound flesh out the universe with additional perspectives. The series has been one of the most discussed YA dystopias for its disturbing premise and its refusal to shy away from the implications.
