The Two Rivers Station series begins at the end of the Civil War. Jack Bell, a Confederate cavalry officer his men called “Hell’s Bell,” refuses to surrender on the Yankees’ terms at Bennett Place. Instead, he steals a Union horse and rides south, only to find that home does not feel like home anymore. When he falls for the daughter of a former slave, the grudges left over from the war follow him, and he decides to head west to his father’s farm at the junction of the Washita and Red River in North Texas.
The three books follow Bell as he builds a life at Two Rivers Station while dealing with stagecoach holdups, local outlaws, and the complications of Reconstruction-era Texas. Peecher has described this as his “Gunsmoke” series, and the comparison fits: the stories are straightforward Western adventures grounded in a well-drawn setting and a strong lead character. Redemption at Two Rivers Station, Deception at Two Rivers Station, and The Yankee Star of Two Rivers Station make up the complete set.
