The Twenty Palaces series follows Ray Lilly, an ex-convict who is recruited as a “wooden man” for the Twenty Palace Society, a secret organization of sorcerers who hunt down predatory magic. Wooden men are considered expendable, sent into dangerous situations ahead of the more valuable sorcerers. Ray survives longer than most.

Twenty Palaces (2011) is a prequel showing how Ray first encountered the Society. Child of Fire (2009), Game of Cages (2010), and Circle of Enemies (2011) were published by Del Rey Books. After the series was dropped, Connolly self-published additional entries: The Twisted Path (2017), The Iron Gate (2022), and The Flood Circle (2022).
