The Tuva Moodyson Mystery series is set in and around Gavrik, a small town in the forests of central Sweden. Tuva is a deaf journalist working for the local paper, and her outsider status in this tight-knit community gives her a unique perspective on the crimes that surface there. Dark Pines (2018) starts the series with a hunting season murder in the surrounding woods.
Each book takes place in a different season and uses the Swedish landscape, long dark winters, oppressive summers, isolated roads, as a character in its own right. Red Snow involves a licorice factory, Black River takes Tuva deeper into local secrets, and the series continues through increasingly personal cases. The setting has drawn comparisons to Scandinavian crime writers like Stieg Larsson and Camilla Lackberg, though Dean’s voice and Tuva’s perspective are distinctly his own.
