Tui T. Sutherland’s earliest published works are a set of picture books and early readers from 2000 to 2002. Jewel Sticker Stories was her first book, an interactive title for young children, followed by Funny Bunnies and four Muppets tie-in books featuring characters like Kermit the Frog. These titles were work-for-hire projects typical of how many children’s authors get their start in the industry.
The Muppets books, including Meet Mo and Ella and Fun with Mo and Ella, were part of a Sesame Street publishing line aimed at preschool-age readers. While these early books give little hint of the dragon epics to come, they show Sutherland building her craft in children’s fiction and learning to write for young audiences. She would move to original chapter books and young adult novels within a few years.
