The Trot and Cap’n Bill series by L. Frank Baum consists of three fantasy books published between 1911 and 1915. Trot is a young girl from California, and Cap’n Bill is her elderly sailor friend. Together they have adventures in magical lands, beginning with The Sea Fairies, where they travel to an underwater kingdom, and continuing in Sky Island, where they visit a floating land in the sky.
Baum originally wrote these books as separate from his famous Oz series, but he brought Trot and Cap’n Bill into the Land of Oz with the third book, The Scarecrow of Oz. The two earlier books are lighthearted, imaginative adventures aimed at young readers, with the same playful tone and inventive world-building that made Baum’s Oz books so popular. Readers who enjoy the Oz series will find these a natural addition.
