Tremontaine is a serialized prequel to Ellen Kushner’s Swordspoint, set in the same unnamed city of Riverside a generation before the events of the original novel. The series was published through Serial Box (later Realm) as episodic fiction, with each season consisting of multiple chapters released on a regular schedule. Kushner created the series and wrote alongside a team of collaborators including Alaya Dawn Johnson, Malinda Lo, Joel Derfner, and others.
The story follows several intertwined characters across the city’s social strata: from the drawing rooms of the noble Hill to the rough streets of Riverside and the docks where international trade drives much of the city’s wealth. Chocolate, mathematics, swordfighting, and political scheming are all woven into the plot. The collaborative writing approach means each episode has a slightly different voice while maintaining a consistent world and ongoing storylines.
Four seasons were produced between 2015 and 2018. Individual episodes and collected season volumes are both available. Readers new to the World of Riverside may want to start with Swordspoint before coming to Tremontaine, though the series was designed to work on its own as well.
