The Town Called Fury series is a Western about community building on the frontier, which sounds peaceful until you remember that building a town in the Old West meant fighting for every inch of ground. The settlement called Fury starts as little more than a collection of wagons and a dream, and the books follow its residents as they try to turn it into something permanent while hostile forces try to wipe it off the map.
Four books were published between 2006 and 2011, starting with A Town Called Fury and continuing through Hard Country, Judgment Day, and Redemption. J.A. Johnstone used the town-building premise to create a Western with unusually broad scope. Instead of one hero against one villain, the books juggle multiple characters and storylines as the whole community faces threats from outside and within. The result reads more like an epic than a typical shoot-em-up, though there’s no shortage of gunfights when the situation calls for them.
