Tony Maxwell brings a traveler’s eye to military history in these non-fiction works. Searching for the Queen’s Cowboys and its companion The Queen’s Cowboys grew out of trips Maxwell made with his son to South Africa while filming a documentary about Strathcona’s Horse, the Canadian cavalry regiment that fought in the Anglo-Boer War.
Pacific War Ghosts takes a different approach, documenting Maxwell’s journeys through the South Pacific to visit the battlefields of World War II. The book is illustrated with over 100 black-and-white photographs of wrecked ships, aircraft, tanks, and guns left behind on the battlefields of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Bougainville, and Tarawa. It serves as both a travel memoir and a photographic record of war’s lasting physical traces.
