The Tome of Bill is Rick Gualtieri’s flagship series and the one that built his readership. It follows Bill Ryder, a self-described nerd and gamer who gets turned into a vampire and finds out he’s basically at the bottom of the supernatural food chain. Bill isn’t cool, powerful, or brooding like most fictional vampires. He’s awkward, mouthy, and constantly in over his head, which is exactly what makes the series work.
Across eleven books, Bill goes from confused newbie vampire to someone who keeps stumbling into increasingly dangerous conflicts with other supernatural creatures. The series doesn’t shy away from gore and real stakes, but the tone stays firmly comedic throughout, carried by Bill’s first-person narration and his refusal to take anything seriously even when he probably should.
The Tome of Bill wrapped up in 2017 with The Last Coven, but Bill’s story continued in the sequel series Bill of the Dead starting in 2019. The series also spawned spin-off adventures and a crossover with the False Icons books, giving readers plenty of ways to stay in the world after the main story concludes.
