Tom Phelan’s six standalone novels span from 1994 to 2015. His debut, In the Season of the Daisies, centers on a 1921 killing and its lasting effects on a small community. Later novels like The Canal Bridge (2005) deal with Irish soldiers in World War I, while Nailer (2011) examines the industrial school system. Lies the Mushroom Pickers Told (2015) is his most recent novel.
Each book is set in Ireland and draws on the history and social fabric of rural communities. Phelan’s writing returns again and again to the question of how past events shape present lives.
