The Tom Hawkins series is set in the criminal underworld and debtors’ prisons of 1720s London. The Devil in the Marshalsea (2014) introduces Tom Hawkins, a clergyman’s son imprisoned for debt who must solve a murder to survive. The Marshalsea prison is depicted with grim detail, drawing on historical records of the real institution where Charles Dickens’s father was later held.
The Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins (2015) and A Death at Fountains Abbey (2016) move the action to different settings while keeping the Georgian London atmosphere. The Silver Collar (2020) is the most recent entry. The series has also been published in German translation. Antonia Hodgson brings a publishing professional’s attention to narrative pacing, and the historical research underpinning each book gives the series a strong sense of time and place.
