The Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell novels follow Sam Fisher, a lone operative working for the NSA’s covert Third Echelon division. Raymond Benson wrote the early books in the series under the pseudonym David Michaels, starting with Splinter Cell in 2004. The novels send Fisher into hostile territory on solo infiltration missions, where he relies on stealth, improvisation, and cutting-edge surveillance equipment to complete his objectives.
The series ran for nine books between 2004 and 2023. Benson wrote the first several entries, establishing the tone and continuity of the prose version of Sam Fisher’s world. Later books were written by other authors under the same David Michaels pseudonym, and the most recent entries (Firewall and Dragonfire) continued the series into the 2020s. The Splinter Cell novels expand on the game storylines while also telling original stories, giving readers more depth on Fisher’s personal life, his relationship with his daughter, and the political forces behind his missions.
