Tina deBellegarde has contributed short fiction to multi-author mystery anthologies. Her story “Tokyo Stranger” appeared in When a Stranger Comes to Town (2021), a Mystery Writers of America anthology edited by Michael Koryta. The collection brought together nineteen original stories built around a concept often attributed to Tolstoy: that all great stories are about either a journey or a stranger arriving in town.
“Tokyo Stranger” draws on deBellegarde’s longtime connection to Japan, where her son has lived for many years in Kyoto. The story follows a yakuza driver forced into a life-or-death decision, a departure from the cozy small-town settings of her novels. It earned a Derringer Award nomination for excellence in short mystery fiction.
