Timothy Jay Smith’s five standalone novels span over a decade of publication and cover a wide geographic range. Cooper’s Promise (2012) and A Vision of Angels (2013) were his first two novels. The Fourth Courier (2019) marked his return after a gap, telling a story of nuclear smuggling in post-communist Poland that drew on his own time working in Eastern Europe.
Fire on the Island (2020) is set on a small Greek island dealing with the arrival of refugees, combining a romance between two men with the social tensions of the migrant crisis. Istanbul Crossing (2024) is his most recent book, again drawing on years of firsthand experience in Turkey. Each novel works as a self-contained story, though readers will notice recurring interests in displacement, identity, and the way personal lives get caught up in political conflicts.
