Tim Wynne-Jones has written standalone novels for every age group over a career spanning more than four decades. His earliest work, Madeline & Ermadello (1977), was followed by adult novels like Odd’s End and Fastyngange, both of which lean toward literary suspense. By the mid-1990s, he had shifted focus to children’s and young adult fiction, producing award-winners like The Maestro and The Boy in the Burning House.
His later standalones include YA novels with an edge. Blink and Caution (2011) follows two homeless teenagers caught up in a kidnapping, while The Emperor of Any Place (2015) weaves together a WWII survival story with a present-day family mystery. The Starlight Claim (2019) is a more recent thriller set at a remote family cottage. Across all of these books, Wynne-Jones writes with a precise, slightly offbeat style that treats young readers as intelligent people.
