These six picture books span three decades of Tim Wynne-Jones’s career, separate from the Zoom trilogy. They show his range within the format. I’ll Make You Small is a slightly eerie story with a fairy-tale quality, while Builder of the Moon takes a more whimsical approach to a child’s cosmic problem. The later books, like Pounce de Leon and Secret Agent Man Goes Shopping for Shoes, are lighter and more comic in tone.
Each book pairs Wynne-Jones’s text with a different illustrator, giving every title its own visual personality. On Tumbledown Hill and The Boat in the Tree both have a poetic rhythm that works well for read-alouds. These are not as widely known as the Zoom books, but they share the same sense of imagination and careful attention to language that marks all of Wynne-Jones’s work for young children.
